Egan Bernal already drives a car, and with the best company, Mafe Motas

Egan Bernal, who on March 24 will celebrate two months of recovery after the collision against a municipal bus in Gachancipá, continues to demonstrate his progress. During the holiday bridge, he shared on his social networks a photograph in which he is seen driving a high-end car together with María Fernanda Motas, his partner.

In the image, uploaded to a story on Instagram, the couple is seen walking a road in the middle of nature. It can also be seen that on the roof of the vehicle there are two bicycles, probably to continue the process of physical conditioning of the pedalist. Although there is a possibility that they were accompanying, from the car, to a training session the brother of the zipaqueño, Ronald Stiven, because he also practices cycling.

The fact that Egan is driving is to celebrate, especially because of the severity of his injuries during the accident in the municipality of Cundinamarque: he fractured his kneecap, femur and second metacarpal of his right hand, as well as some ribs and vertebrae. He was even subjected to tube-to-chest surgery, as a lung was punctured during the fall.

In addition to using his social networks to account for the recovery, the winner of the Tour de France 2019 and the Giro d'Italia 2021 has used them to make complaints. On his Twitter account, on March 17, the Young Wonder of Zipaquirá said that, while he was accompanying his brother Ronald to cycling training — Egan from a car, of course — a tractomule came close to running him over, a fact that would have involved another serious blow to his family.

“A mule from the same company that was trending a few days ago for almost running over some cyclists, almost ran over my brother. Good thing I was accompanying him in the car. How lazy this repetitive situation, the company should give some classes on road safety,” he published, although he did not mention the car brand.

But it is not only tractomula drivers who continue to put the lives of cyclists at risk. On November 13, Egan shared a video showing how a car came close to running over him when overtaking him near a bend. It happened while training in the vicinity of Tabio, Cundinamarca.

Xabier Artexte, physical trainer at Egan, gave more information on what will be the next step in the rehabilitation process. In conversation with La Gazzetta dello Sport, Egan explained he will condition his exercises to the response of the back, as the other parts of the body have responded correctly.

Artexte also said that it is not unreasonable to think of Bernal's return to the roads before the end of this season, given the physical and mental condition he has shown to overcome the accident: “Egan is a top sportsman and his recovery skills are also above average. I would not reject this possibility, even without setting it as a fixed goal. It's an option that exists.”
