The 27-kilometer race started this Sunday after 8.30. Nine minutes earlier, Guido Gomez posted a photo on his WhatsApp status. In the image he was seen among a multitude of runners. “Back,” he wrote. An hour and a half later, the 49-year-old man collapsed in the middle of the circuit, which was taking place through the mountains of the Buenos Aires city of Tandil. He passed away.
The news revolutionized the people of Tandil: the Montagne Adventure Race is one of the most emblematic and convening races in our country. Such is the case that it was announced in October 2021. This morning, however, the event was tinged with mourning. It all started around 10 o'clock, when a call to SAME warned about a man who had vanished in the middle of the circuit.
“He was bleeding from the mouth and nose,” says El Echo de Tandil about Guido Gómez, the man from the city of Tapalqué, who decompensated in the middle of the race. Although he was taken by ambulance to the Ramón Santamarina Hospital in Tandil, and despite the care he received in the shock room, he died of cardiorespiratory arrest.
The race, which had started at 8.30 am, covered a 27-kilometer route through fields and slopes, individually or in teams.
According to information released by the Runners Club, the organizer of the race, all competitors had to present a disclaimer when registering, stating “under oath” that they did not suffer from “acquired or congenital physical conditions, or injuries that could cause disorders in my health or conditions of life, as a result of participating in this competition”.
At the same time, the competitors claimed to have carried out “a medical check-up” that certified that they were “in optimal physical condition to participate in it”. So far, the company has not spoken about what happened.
Guido Gómez studied at the Cadet School of the Buenos Aires Penitentiary Service. From the Facebook account, the Institution expressed “deep regret” at the death of the Inspector General (R.E.). “We will remember him for his vocation of service and his professionalism. We accompanied his family, who were his co-workers and members of his promotion. We pray that they have the strength to help them cope with this irreparable loss,” they said.
Something similar was done from the Security Headquarters of the Buenos Aires Penitentiary Service. “It's so hard to have to give this news. Dear Inspector General Guido Gomez may you rest in peace. You left this world doing what you were passionate about, I met you at the Cadet School as your Instructing Officer. We shared endless days in Olmos, it is a difficult mourning to carry”, said one of his colleagues.
