“Comedy is an X-ray of society”: Catalina Guzmán spoke about the responsibility of making people laugh

The comedian spoke with Infobae about machismo in the industry and spoke of the controversy between Diego Mateus and Carolina Navas

Catalina Guzmán is one of the most prominent comedians in Colombia, not only because she has had international exposure with her appearances on Comedy Central and a Netflix special, but because she is a pioneer of this profession in her country.

Infobae interviewed the artist from Bogota, who commented that her “dark past” was marked by the professions of advertising and stage production, although she was able to realize in time what her true vocation was and that is why she decided to learn with Gonzalo Valderrama, teacher of many other comedians.

“I was a person who was always behind the stage, but I was very curious and decided to try and see what was going on. I did a workshop, I wrote my first lines and one day I stopped, although it took a long time for that to happen, about a year,” he recalled about this first presentation, in which he got all the applause.

However, the public reception was not always so good and this taught Catalina Guzmán one of the most basic rules for those who make comedy: “learning is constant and mistakes remind us that we are fallible human beings”.

Since then, women have dedicated themselves to writing routines in which their work with language and ideas stands out, which has facilitated their development in a scene that is mostly made up of men.

“In particular, I have never had greater difficulty being a woman and a comedian, but I feel privileged in that regard because I have seen girls who encounter a bit hostile, with people who mess with sexist, misogynistic and daring themes,” she added.

In this regard, Infobae took the opportunity to ask Catalina Guzmán for her opinion on the controversy generated by her friend and colleague Diego Mateus, who recently insulted Carolina Navas in full show, to the point that she decided to flee the place.

In addition, there was talk about the fact of making black humor and touching on certain topics that may be sensitive to some people.

It should be remembered that Catalina Guzmán premiered her show a few days ago 'What happens on the fourth floor? ' , in which she talks about the myths and realities that exist among women when they reach the age of 40.

This comedy reviews the most endearing memories of those people who were teenagers in the 90s: music, television shows, characters and funny situations are some of the ingredients that make up this fun staging.

As for the presentation venue, 'La Tata con botas' opted to release 'The White Rabbit', an intimate room of the Vive Astor Plaza theater that was going to open its doors in March 2020, but which waited two years to receive the public, as a result of the covid-19 pandemic. He will be there until next April 30, on Fridays and Saturdays at 8 pm.
