At least five people were killed and dozens are believed to be missing after a bulk carrier crashed into a small ferry on a river near the capital of Bangladesh on Sunday.
Nearly two dozen people managed to swim ashore after the freighter MV Ruposhi-9 collided with MV Afsaruddin, southeast of Dhaka, the capital, according to police.
Local media reported scenes of panic among passengers, who jumped into the water as the ship sank.
“We recovered five bodies, including a man, three women and a child,” local police chief Shah Jaman told AFP.
According to police inspector Aslam Mia, it is believed that there were more than 60 passengers on the ferry, 22 of whom managed to swim ashore.
