At least 5 dead and 32 injured in a multiple wind-up during a carnival in Belgium

The event took place in the town of Strépy-Bracquegnies in the southeast of the country

At least five people were killed and more than thirty were injured after a driver hit a crowd celebrating a carnival party in the Belgian town of Strépy-Bracquegnies, municipality of La Louvière, in the southeast of the country.

The event took place around 05.00 (local time) and the first balance provided by the mayor of the municipality, Jacques Gobert, speaks of at least five deaths, 12 serious injuries and a score of injuries.

“The car crashed at high speed into a crowd and the driver tried to escape the scene but was intercepted,” the mayor explained in statements collected by Belgian media outlet 'La Libre'.

The police will shortly hold a press conference to clarify the circumstances of the incident.
