“True Detective” will have a fourth season on HBO

Barry Jenkins, winner of the Oscar for “Moonlight”, will executive produce the new episodes that will not feature the return of Nic Pizzolatto, the creator of the police anthology

It has been three years before the great return of True Detective, the television anthology of the police genre that is broadcast on HBO file. In the series' history, Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson starred in the first season; Colin Farrell and Rachel McAdams played the central roles of the second; and the third made Mahershala Ali the first black detective seen in this fiction.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the creator of this police universe, Nic Pizzolatto, will not be involved this time and the script will fall to Mexican filmmaker Issa López (They Come Back and Everything Bad). She will share the executive production with Barry Jenkins, the director who won the Oscars for Moonlight. The project for the next chapters is currently under development and López will be responsible for directing the pilot. Pizzolatto could have only one role as executive producer even though he is not linked to production.

In January 2020, the showrunner held meetings with HBO executives and assured that they agreed that it was best for everyone to go their separate ways. With regard to the departure of the American screenwriter and producer, the television house was in charge of all the rights to the drama and, with it, it was given the full power to choose an entirely new team of writers and producers to explore other perspectives of the police and crime universe.

The original season earned True Detective a total of four Emmy nominations, and he won a victory in Best Direction of a Drama Series for Cary Joji Fukunaga. After the third airing, Ali was considered in the category of Best Leading Actor in a limited series or television movie.

The second installment also attracted two movie stars (Colin Farrell and Rachel McAdams), but did not achieve the same success. (HBO Max)

Now, it will be Jenkins who is behind this return of production to TV and with a brilliant filmography that precedes it. He won the highest recognition from the Hollywood Academy for his film Moonlight in 2017 and worked alongside Prime Video for the series The Underground Railroad in recent years.

The acclaimed season that kicked off True Detective

McConaughey and Harrelson gave life respectively to Rust Cohle and Martin Hart, two detectives from the Louisiana State Police's Criminal Investigations Division who, in 1995, were assigned a macabre case of the murder of a woman. Track after track, the agents go after the truth through details that were not known and visiting places that were linked to the victim.

In 2019, Mahershala Ali starred in the third season that first featured African American main characters. (HBO Max)

All three seasons of True Detective are available to view in the catalog of HBO Max.
