After two years of closures and restrictions due to covid-19, the return of music, art and culture has encouraged tourists to visit. In 2021, the progress of the reopening allowed the improvement of several indicators such as the flow of migrants, or the transit of Colombians and foreigners through the country.
According to the figures from Migration Colombia, in the case of nationals, while in 2020 the number of passengers who touched migration air posts barely reached 2.4 million, in 2021 that figure rose to 5.7 million registered passengers, which represented an increase of 57.5%.
For the cultural sector, live events with 100% capacity have been held in different regions for a few months. This has not only helped to improve the economy of those who live in the music industry or the entertainment industry in general, but also encouraged tourists from all over the world to participate in the festivities.
To close 2021, the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Tourism confirmed that 411,000 visitors came to the country from other countries. A large percentage of these visitors arrived in the capital of Vallecaucana, where the year ended with the Cali Fair.
To start 2022, Manizales was the place that opened this year's tourist calendar, then Medellin, Cartagena and Bogotá were the places that received the most tourists.
As for hotel occupancy, according to the National Department of Statistics (DANE), for year-end events held in the country, registered accommodation occupancy was 54.4% 21.6 points above the same month in 2020. These numbers continue to rise thanks to cultural events scheduled for 2022.
The revival has also been a boost for artists who were affected during the years when performances had to stop. Hotel chains like Selina have decided to lend their spaces as a showcase to return to live shows and support Colombian music. For this reason, the network will be one of the official sponsors of the Stereo Picnic Festival in order to be able to accompany and support the talents born in the country.
With regard to tourism, the end of the year represented the main reason for international travel, with 46.9% participation in the case of Colombians and 35.8% for foreign registrations.
