Faced with increased violence in Nuevo Laredo, Tamaulipas, due to clashes between rival criminal groups, as well as attacks on civilians due to the capture of drug lords, has forced the federal government to take measures to diminish or eradicate this climate of terror.

Through the Secretariat of National Defense (Sedena), the Tamaulipas territory has been strengthened with almost a thousand elements. The first 738 soldiers were mobilized last Tuesday, March 15, along with four gunned helicopters.

On the afternoon of March 18, 250 elements belonging to the Special Forces Units arrived as part of the Joint Task Force “Mexico” to inhibit organized crime activities in that municipality.

The statement issued by the federal agency stated that the main mission of these units is “to strengthen the rule of law and to collaborate with the authorities in the detention of members of organized crime, acting at all times with full respect for human rights”.

He added that among the features to be carried out are their mobility and ability to deploy, the weapons, material, equipment and specialized training they have for urban operations, which will strengthen inter-agency operations carried out in coordination with the Secretariat for Security and Protection Citizen, and the Office of the Attorney-General of the Republic, as well as with State and municipal authorities.

“These activities reaffirm the undeclinable decision of the federal government to continue to act against organized crime, meeting the needs that Tamaulipas society demands,” the bulletin said.

All these measures and reinforcements sent to Nuevo Laredo were taken for all the events resulting from the capture of Juan Gerardo Treviño Chavez, El Huevo, leader of the Northeast Cartel, last Sunday, March 13.

For example, two days after, Tuesday, March 15, after the capo's capture, members of the criminal organization he led demanded his release by carrying out 38 firearm attacks against military bases and civilian homes.

Later, on the 17th of the same month, the government of Tamaulipas announced that a couple appeared before the First Civil Registry Office in Nuevo Laredo to request the act of birth of the capo.

The people identified themselves as the lawyer and the father of Treviño Chávez, who assured that they were only looking for the issuance of this document. However, officials assured that the requested Birth Record was cancelled on November 13, 2020, since the generation of it was carried out through the use of false data.

Realizing that they would not succeed, both subjects left the place, although they returned moments later accompanied by a group of armed civilians, with whom, under threats, they requested some recognition of the existence of the birth certificate referred to.

This violent situation also led to the closure of some activities, the suspension of activities at the United States consulate, as well as a travel alert issued by the US Department of State (DoS) to prevent its citizens from going to that border destination; in addition, it authorized the departure of its non-emergency consulate personnel.

So far, it seems that the strategies adopted to reduce violence are bearing fruit, as the Tamaulipas Ministry of Public Security reported that “social coexistence and economic and social activities are developing calmly and normally in Nuevo Laredo.”

It was detailed that the Safe Corridor program was reinforced in the area of international bridges and main roads of the city. In addition, there will be a greater influx of police officers at the points with the highest number of people.
