The Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos (UNMSM) has made history again, but not for the reasons it surely expected. Following allegations of alleged fraud in the entrance test held last weekend, the rector Jerí Ramón announced that the 2022-II admission process. The news caused a stir among those looking for a place in the house of studies, as well as on social networks where users regretted what happened, especially those linked to the university.
The former rector of UNMSM and director of the Place of Memory, Manuel Burga, said he was sad about the news, especially for those who did manage to fill a vacancy legitimately. “I ask the competent authorities to clarify what happened and punish the perpetrators,” his Twitter post reads. It should be recalled that after the denunciation of an alleged leak of the examination, the House of Studies announced the intervention of the Public Prosecutor's Office “for the initiation of investigations to determine responsibilities and initiate criminal proceedings if appropriate”.
Marcel Velásquez, professor at the university and author of the book “Los hijos de la plague”, also shared the news through social networks and said that UNMSM is “in its most difficult time. As a teacher, I apologize to all applicants for this institutional failure,” he wrote. Until a week ago, the San Marcos admission office, through a statement, claimed that the software it used for the test confirmed “the impossibility of leaking the admission exam.”
“How are the applicants who obtained legal admission to UNMSM look like?” , wrote the news anchor Fatima Chávez, who has been a student at the aforementioned university. In addition, he recalled the rector's participation in attempts to make changes to university reform since Congress and pointed to her as responsible for the uncertainty faced by the applicants. Jerí herself has confirmed that the tests are suspended until further notice. “The payment (by way of entitlement to the admission exam) of applicants is assured and the exam will be scheduled for a new date, taking all the precautions there have been and to have,” he explained.
Whoever was the chairman of the High-Level Commission for Political Reform, Fernando Tuesta, also blamed the current administration of the San Marcos University for the crisis it is going through today. In addition to the students, he expressed his concern for the image that the house of studies will project nationally and internationally. According to complaints made on the same day of the exam, the people behind the leak of the test would be both students and professors from the same university. They ensured admission “with a safe method already tested earlier in other universities”, the published conversations read.
Journalist Paola Ugaz also shared the announcement made by rector Jerí and said she was waiting for a new program of the event as soon as possible. “And let him appreciate, now, the importance of Sunedu in raising university quality,” he wrote on his Twitter account. This last mention recalls the university authority's support for the bill that seeks to give non-licensed universities a second chance and return to a model similar to that of the National Assembly of Rectors (ANR).
“We ask for parents' understanding. We cannot allow students to enter buying tests and who have not dedicated themselves to studying. San Marcos is competition, San Marcos cannot afford to receive businessmen within our beloved alma mater”, were the words of Rector Jerí to justify the announced decision.
