The doggies on the big screen are an infallible element to attract children's and family audiences for decades. This time, Netflix presents us with a history of this cut with The Rescue of Ruby, a film based on real events that starred actor Grant Gustin (known for his role in The Flash) and a mixed breed puppy. What is this moving adventure about a man and his faithful companion?
“State trooper Daniel dreams of being part of an elite canine unit, but no one wants to give him the chance. The dog Ruby dreams of having a home, but is about to lose hope. When fate unites the paths of Dan and Ruby, their unbreakable bond will help them meet the most difficult challenge of their lives. Based on a true story,” says the official synopsis.
What is Ruby's Rescue about?
The film takes as its great inspiration a real event that happened in Rhode Island, United States. Ruby, a dog pet resulting from a cross between an Australian shepherd and Border Collie, has been adopted five times and in all of them returned to the shelter. Last time, a family decided to take her home to prevent her from getting a lethal injection, but again, her restless and playful character was uncontrollable enough to keep her with them. As friendly as it is, no one wants to take that responsibility or give it the time it needs.
However, hope is the last thing lost and her caretaker of the temporary shelter, Pat (Camille Sullivan), managed to get her taken in by Daniel O'Neil (Grant Gustin), who will turn her into a search and rescue dog. In Ruby's Rescue, this police officer seeks to join this canine division and do a grain of sand in cases of disappearances and to give relief to those who need it in open water, an apprenticeship that would later lead her to save lives and be rewarded for her sacrificial and courageous work.
Both protagonists will experience many things together and little by little they will get to know each other to form an ideal team that could have the opportunity to enter the canine academy of Matt Zarella (Scott Wolf). She will be one of the few mestizas to get to do this job, since they are the pure animal shepherds who are normally chosen, although the high price of this dog breed has also become a problem.
Daniel's wife, Melissa (Kaylah Zander), reflects Ruby's special case in his own life. The two have been rejected, desperate to achieve their goals and have a relentless energy. These attributes will not be typical of a search and rescue dog, but it will make its way when its current owner acts with empathy and feels identified with his experience.
Ruby's rescue was filmed under the direction of Katt Shea with a main cast consisting of Grant Gustin, Camille Sullivan, Scott Wolf, Kaylah Zander and Tom McBeath. It was released on March 17 on Netflix.
