The Ministry of Infrastructure, Communications and Transport (SICT) and the Federal Civil Aviation Agency indicate that as of January 2022, 77 airports were registered in the country, including those in Mexico City, Cancun, Guadalajara, Tijuana and Monterrey, since these five airports account for approximately 71 per cent of them. percent of national air traffic.
In addition to airports, Mexico has an air infrastructure that is complemented by 1,492 airfields and 545 heliports. Overall, airports carry approximately 8 million passengers per month, a figure that may vary according to peak seasons.
In the country there are 45 airports certified with the status of International, however, almost three quarters of all air operations are concentrated in the five mentioned above. Highlighting that Mexico City International Airport concentrates only 50%.
Miguel Torruco Marques, Secretary of Tourism, reported that in January 2022 airports in Cancun, Mexico City and Los Cabos received the highest number of international tourists. Because international tourism represents one of the largest sources of foreign exchange in the country, Mexico has nearly fifty international terminals, which have customs and border control facilities that allow passengers to travel directly from other countries without passing through the Mexican capital.

In March of this year, SICT declared the saturation of Mexico City's International Airport, Benito Juárez (AICM), noting that it concentrates almost 51 percent of air operations nationwide, so delays in it affect the rest of the country.
For this reason, it instructed its schedules coordinator to carry out a review and, where appropriate, propose to modify the general bases for the allocation of landing and take-off times at airports under saturation conditions, which were published in September 2017, and in which a maximum of 61 operations are determined by time.
For the administration of Mexico's airports, they are distributed into the following groups: Airports and Auxiliary Services (ASA), Grupo Aeroportuario Centro Norte (OMA), Grupo Aeroporturaio del Pacifico (GAP), Grupo Aeroportuario del Sureste (ASUR), Mexico City Airport Group (GACM).
In July 2021, the Federal Government granted in favor of the Majority State-owned Company Aeropuerto Internacional Felipe Ángeles, S.A. de C.V., a concession to build, manage, operate and operate the Felipe Ángeles International Airport, which will enter into operation on March 21, 2022, which will be added to the airport infrastructure in the center of the country.

Although it has not received any certification from international organizations, “Felipe Ángeles” International Airport (AIFA) was listed by the government as an International Airport , so that it will be able to receive both Mexican and foreign aircraft.
A few days after the Felipe Ángeles International Airport (AIFA) in Santa Lucia de Mexico becomes operational, on March 21, Venezuela's Conviasa airline registered as the first international airline to announce its entry into operations at this airport.
On social media, the airline, founded in 2004, announced two flights to and from Caracas connected with AIFA. The first one was scheduled to land on Mondays at 10:00 a.m. with a return to its country of origin on Mondays at 4:00 p.m., central Mexico time. The frequency of this flight will be monthly and not weekly as originally thought.
Other domestic destinations that Felipe Angeles International Airport will have are Tijuana, Monterrey, Mérida, Cancun and Villahermosa.
