CHICAGO (AP) — Sergiño Dest will miss the last three matches of the US national team in the World Cup qualifier, after suffering a tug in his left thigh.

The right-back was replaced on Friday in the squad by George Bello, who plays for the left.

Dest was injured on Thursday, during the Europa League match that Barcelona beat Turkey's Galatasaray.

His injury left DeAndre Yedlin and Reggie Cannon as the first options for starting in the right-back defense during next Thursday's match, a visit to Mexico at Estadio Azteca.

On March 27, the United States will host Panama, and three days later they will close the tie in Costa Rica.

Bello, transferred in January from Atlanta to Germany's Arminia Bielefeld, debuted on February 7 and played his first kick-off match on Sunday He could be a substitute for Antonee Robinson, who plays for Fulham and is the likely starter as a left-back.

Dest was expected to replace Robinson.

“We also see that Kellyn Acosta might be able to play as a left-back, but given that he's had minutes in the midfield, it might not be ideal,” said US coach Gregg Berhalter.

Bello has made six international appearances, including a starting one against Mexico at last year's Gold Cup. Berhalter said Thursday that he was also contemplating Joe Scally, Shaq Moore and Sam Vines.

The United States is looking to return to the World Cup after being left out in 2018. He starts his training on Monday in Houston.

Canada leads the final octagonal of the qualifying round at Concacaf, with 25 points, and the United States is second with 21, beating Mexico, which for now has the third and final direct ticket to Qatar by goal difference.

Panama is fourth with 17 units and the provisional right to play an intercontinental repechage.
