SAKHIR, Bahrain (AP) — Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc surprised Formula One champion Max Verstappen on Saturday by getting a brilliant starting position for the Bahrain Grand Prix, which marks the start of the season.
Verstappen was ahead of Leclerc by 0.015 seconds in the final stage, but the Red Bull star lost time and finished at 0.123sec, while his former teenage rival in karting won the 10th pole of his career.
Seven-time champion Lewis Hamilton got some ground for Mercedes on his last turn, but will start from a disappointing fifth place, behind Mexican Sergio Perez's Red Bull and Spaniard Carlos Sainz's Ferrari, who finished third.
Hamilton's former teammate Valtteri Bottas made the day bitter for Mercedes by placing sixth for his new Alfa Romeo team, while his replacement George Russell placed ninth after a disappointing last lap.
