Why Windows 9 never existed

Microsoft's company jumped from Windows 7 and 8 to 10, leaving a “gap” between generations of its operating system

The updates that will arrive in Windows 11, have recalled that in the past Windows 9 never arrived even though everyone expected it after Windows 8 disappointed millions of users.

Despite the years, it is still a mystery why it did not come into existence. However, Microsoft, a responsible company, had its compelling reasons for deciding to skip a number in its generations of operating systems. Spoiler: immediately separate themselves from their past, as if they wanted to start from scratch.

Microsoft has distinguished itself by its technological innovation, so with Windows 8 it opted for the possibility of touching the screen of the PC or laptop, in a kind of hybrid between tablet and computer. However, it was never such a powerful function that it became a global trend.

Although the operating system wanted to do something different to distinguish itself, unifying the interface of the mobile phone with that of the computer or laptop, the idea did not work quite well, since it made users feel that something was missing to come together.

In spurts, Microsoft tried to patch the criticisms and errors with the Windows 8.1 it launched in 2013, which allowed users to log in directly to the classic desktop, but it wasn't enough.

Later, the technology company began working on a replacement to remedy the catastrophe. At the end of 2013 there was talk of the next great version of Windows, which logically everyone expected to be 9, to happen Windows 7 and Windows 8.

However, in time, the company launched the new operating system under the name of Windows 10, skipping 9. The proposal was much more powerful than expected, as it aimed to unify the Microsoft device ecosystem. That is, giving the user the opportunity to govern the PC, tablet, mobile or Xbox One itself.

Even so, the technology company did not say anything about the numerical leap, however, Terry Myerson, head of development, pointed out in 2014 that: “based on the product that will arrive, and how different our strategy will be in general, that it would not be correct to call it Windows 9″.

In addition, it was not in plans to call it Windows One and make it tie with the line of Xbox One consoles, besides there would have been a chance for confusion, since the original version, released in 1985, was called Windows 1.0.

One of the theories of why it didn't exist in Windows 9 points out that it could have been because of superstition, since in Japan the number 9 is bad luck. Of course, this idea doesn't seem to have much to do with the company's decision.

Far from superstitions and user theories, the most accurate reason would be that Microsoft wanted to give “clean slate”, clearly, without changing the name of Windows that had been its banner for years.

Thus, from 8 to 10, the marketing strategy gave a sense of progress and superior improvements, separating its stumbling block from the new technological ambition. The new name undoubtedly worked and since then there has been no other leap in numbers in its generation of operating systems.

Currently, there is already Windows 11, which is releasing improvements, however, it still does not achieve the same success as its predecessor, Windows 10.
