Two Telegram users were identified by Mexican authorities as responsible for sharing “packs”, that is, intimate photographs of women on the messaging platform. Between them they kept more than 700 folders with images of their victims.
It was the Public Security and Attorney General's Office of the State of Sonora who announced that they know the identity of the subjects, who distribute links in Telegram groups, as well as on websites or forums such as Reddit, 4Chan and Discord.
This action is part of the follow-up to the issue of cybercrime, in which 25 Telegram accounts are investigated, of which nine reside in the entity.
In addition, on March 10, 92 TikTok accounts and 2 Telegram groups were deactivated because they advocated crime and were spreading dangerous or offensive content to users of both platforms.
The authority said it will strengthen actions and investigations so that women and minors can live safely, highlighting that those responsible will be punished with the full weight of the Law Women's Access to a Life Free of Violence for the State of Sonora.
Likewise, the value of some victims of these crimes who have lodged their formal complaint, who have been followed up and accompanied by the authorities, was also recognized.
According to data from the prosecutor's office, the main cybercrimes in 2020 to date are cyber extortion, through loan applications dedicated to the theft of user information; financial crimes, through social networks and password theft, mainly on Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp.
In the face of such records, it has alerted citizens to take preventive measures and thus avoid becoming victims of fraud or any other crime.
As mentioned, authorities previously deactivated 92 TikTok accounts, because they promoted their “polleros” services, who are the people who are known illegally to illegally cross the border with the United States; in addition, they offered work to transport drugs and weapons between the two countries.
According to local authorities, TikTok profiles had a reach of more than 18 million views. If you don't stop them, they could put more people who contact them at risk.
At the moment it is unknown why the Chinese-origin platform did not previously lower its accounts, since its community regulations state that: “We do not allow the representation, promotion or trafficking of drugs or other controlled substances. Trade in tobacco and alcohol products is also prohibited on the platform.”
In addition, he assures that “Our platform does not allow content that is shocking, graphic, sadistic or truculent or that promotes, normalizes or extolls extreme violence or suffering. In the event that we detect a threat to public safety, we will ban the account and, if appropriate, report the incident to the relevant authorities.”
Although these two platforms were targeted on this occasion, similar practices have also been reported on WhatsApp and Facebook. Anonymous complaints have revealed groups, such as “Packs Queretaro” in Mexico, where a man offered intimate images of women using the phrase “I sell packs and distribute women”.
After the noise of users, the group was discharged, however, it was in force several weeks before, although algorithms must detect these actions and block them without needing Internet users to select the option to “report publication”.
