Turkey inaugurated on Friday the longest suspension bridge in the world, built over the Dardanelles Strait (northwest), the natural border between Europe and Asia.

The “Canakkale 1915 Bridge”, 4.6 km long and with a range (distance between the two pillars) of 2 km, is the first to cross this sixty kilometer arm of sea that connects the Aegean Sea with the Sea of Marmara.

The project, at a total cost of 2.5 billion euros (2,766 million dollars), is added to the other three bridges in Istanbul that form the link between the two continents, and will connect eastern Thrace with Anatolia, bordering the country's capital.

Its inauguration took place on the anniversary of the naval victory of the Ottoman forces on March 18, 1915 before the allies at the Battle of the Dardanelles, also known as the Battle of Gallipoli.

The fighting, which lasted until January 1916, led to the victory of the Ottoman Empire over British and French troops.

This bridge is “a way to keep alive the memory of the martyrs of Canakkale,” President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Friday in his inaugural speech.
