Sergio Fajardo lashes out against Fico and claims that he is the only one who can stop Petro

The presidential candidate assured that he and the Centro Esperanza coalition are the only ones who could face the leader of the Historical Pact

The legislative elections that took place last Sunday, March 13, showed a clear winner, the Historical Pact, which won 16 seats in the Senate and managed to count 2,302,847 votes, according to the General Registry of the Nation. Also, in the interparty consultation, the clear winner was Gustavo Petro, who won 4,474,912 votes and became the presidential candidate of the coalition

The second presidential pre-candidate who won the most votes in the consultations was Federico Gutiérrez, who won a total of 2,152,670 votes, however, Francia Márquez was the third most voted candidate with 783,160 votes, surpassing the winner of the Centro Esperanza coalition consultation, Sergio Fajardo, who had 723,084 votes.

It would be precisely the presidential candidate who gave something to talk about after referring to the situation in the country where, for some, only two major political forces are reflected, the Historical Pact with Gustavo Petro and Team for Colombia with Federico Gutiérrez, who recently received the support of the Center Democratic after the resignation of Ivan Zuluaga.

Although much has been said about the possible alliances that could be formed to reach the elections more strongly, Sergio Fajardo posted a message on his social networks in which he attacked Federico Gutiérrez and pointed out that he was the only one who could beat Gustavo Petro in a runoff in the presidential elections.

“Petro must be happy to see how they ride Fico as a contender because he knows that he beats him easily in the second round. We are the option that can face and beat Petro,” said the presidential candidate of the Centro Esperanza coalition. This generated many comments on social networks and some users even reminded him of what happened in 2018 when he claimed to be the only candidate who “could beat Uribe's”, however, on that occasion he failed to reach the second round.

This statement also generated controversy as the Team's candidate for Colombia overcame it by a wide margin in the coalition consultations, and even the Historic Pact candidate, Francia Márquez, had more votes than him.

In the most recent debate conducted by Red Más Noticias, El Colombiano, El Heraldo, El Universal, among others, he again mentioned to Federico Gutiérrez that, “he is not going to win, what is most useful for Petro is that Federico Gutiérrez is his opponent because he would never, ever, beat Petro” and added that, “Federico can cover, make up for a on the other hand, but that model sold out in Colombia. This is a terrible government that will have no continuity.”

Federico Gutiérrez was not silent and responded to Fajardo's accusations, noting that, “I'm surprised to hear Sergio, he seems mean, arrogant, bad friend. If anyone supported Sergio when he was mayor it was me, I don't regret that. I have never been elected to public office with the support of Uribe or other sectors. When you were mayor, they did support you, when you chose Alonso, they did support you and there if they didn't care to mark themselves as uribists, but today they play crazy.”

He also added that, “I wrote to Fajardo the day before the elections and told him that I wished him success in the contest; he wrote to me congratulating me, I also congratulated him. What surprises me is that in private he says one thing and in public another. That seems very wrong to me and the country should know that there should be no double standards here.”
