The women's professional football league is relatively new in Mexico, barely five years after its creation. It was born in December 2016 on the initiative of the Mexican Football Federation (FMF) and under the official name of Liga MX Femenil.

In its first edition, held in 2017, all the teams in the Liga MX competed with their women's version, except for two teams: Chiapas and Puebla, who were unable to put together a draw due to their financial problems.

It wasn't until the following year, in 2018, that the Liga MX Femenil was able to play as the men's version does, that is, with 18 teams.

As in the men's edition, Liga Femenil MX plays two short tournaments a year. To date, eight competitions have been held with their respective squads.

The first team to be crowned champions in the history of the Liga MX Femenil was the Chivas de Guadalajara, while the team that has won the most titles is that of Tigres de la UANL, with four trophies. Monterrey has two championships and America has one.

As the tournaments of the Liga Femenil MX progress, the greater is their exposure in traditional media, as well as on social networks. In 2020, the Liga Femenil MX broke records in audience levels, while in 2021 the first foreign players arrived.
