The last State of Play - the format through which PlayStation presents previews of different projects - focused on Hogwarts Legacy, the game that will be placed in the Harry Potter universe and will take players into the magical world of the late 19th century, prior to the events that everyone knows. The event showed more than 10 minutes of gameplay of the title and allowed us to have a closer look at the gameplay they are going to propose and the world they built.
The game will invite users to play the role of a magic student who, as already revealed long ago, will possess “the key to an ancient secret that threatens to destroy the magical world”. That student will discover that he does not have normal abilities and that he has the ability to master ancient magic.
All this will take place in an open world, which will not only allow you to explore Hogwarts, the school of magic, but also other iconic locations that all fans will recognize, such as the Forbidden Forest or Hogsmeade.
Returning to the preview that was revealed during the State of Play, the video begins with the mystery that - it is understood - will push the plot: it will be necessary to discover why the ancient magic that the protagonist can manipulate reappeared and who are looking to control it in order to destroy the wizards and witches. “The fate of the entire wizarding world could be in your hands,” they warn.
First of all, players will have to create whatever wizard or witch they want to be, and then give rise to one of the most important moments in the Harry Potter universe: the choice of the house where the students will belong. Once they are assigned one of the four - between Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw and Slytherin - they will be able to meet with their peers and start attending classes.
Not only will players be able to learn different spells in classes, but they will also have the ability to prepare potions - which will be useful when fighting - or cultivate plants with special characteristics. To that will be added the option of exploring the school, even being able to visit some spaces for the first time.
A peculiarity is that the protagonist will start studying from the fifth year, which in principle could respond to the need for him to have the ability to control a greater range of spells or abilities and not be too young.
“The magical world of this time is full of dangers, creatures corrupted by a magical force, powerful goblins and sinister witches and wizards all ready to fight and kill to achieve their goals. In fact, there is an uncomfortable alliance between goblins and dark magicians,” they explained.
The fight was a section that could also be seen in greater detail in the preview. Players will have different spells that they will be able to perform, as well as combinations and block moves for the attacks they receive from other wizards, witches or creatures.
School classmates will also play an important role. They will be able to learn different skills and, once they are known in greater depth, they can become companions to advance the story.
The iconic Hall of Requirements will function as a base on which different stations can be installed to produce the items needed, including for planting plants, making potions or improving equipment. It will also be a space to shelter different magical creatures.
What the teaser showed allows fans of the franchise to get excited. The reconstruction of the different spaces of the school and the scenarios that surround it is very successful, but also the animation of the different objects reinforces the idea of being immersed in a magical world where everything has life.
The story - and the dilemma that the protagonist will face - are attractive enough to generate an interesting narrative, which does not depend on the story that everyone already knows thanks to books and movies. The possibility of delving into a new era in that universe is another plus that adds up.
In addition, the game seems to be full of details that any follower expected to see in an adaptation, but that can also make this title a great gateway to the Harry Potter universe. The launch - scheduled for the end of the year holidays - is still far away and in the coming months more of Hogwarts Legacy will be visible, but this glimpse triggered expectations and it is felt that it has all the potential to transform itself into a great version of the magical world that many have been fans of years and years ago.
