Greece offers to rebuild the Ukrainian maternity hospital of Mariupol

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis declared on Friday that he is ready to rebuild the maternity hospital in Mariupol, a besieged city in southern Ukraine, which was bombed a few days ago.

“Greece is ready to rebuild the motherhood of Mariupol, the center of the Greek minority in Ukraine, a city dear to us and become the symbol of the barbarism of war,” the prime minister wrote on Twitter.

Last week, the maternity hospital and the pediatric hospital, located in the same building in Mariupol, were bombed, killing three people, including a child.

The Greek consul in Mariupol, Manolis Androulakis, who until a few days ago was hidden in a basement in the city, was evacuated earlier this week to Moldova.

With more than 100,000 people, the Greek ethnic community in Mariupol laments at least 10 people killed since the beginning of the war.

This diaspora comes mainly from the “Pontic Greeks”, the Helleno-speaking Christian populations of the cities on the perimeter of the Black Sea.

More than 11,000 Ukrainian refugees, including more than 3,000 children, have arrived in Greece since the start of the Russian invasion of Ukraine on February 24.
