The Ministry of Health of the Nation reported this Friday, 18, that in the last 24 hours, 77 deaths from coronavirus and 14,416 new infections were recorded. Thus, the total number of cases in the country since the beginning of the pandemic is 9,004,829, while deaths total 127,439.

Argentina records a sharp decline in the number of infections for the eighth consecutive week, as last week showed a 98.24 percent drop from the peak of the pandemic, in January with more than 800,000 infected.

As for deaths according to vaccination status, in epidemiological week 8 there were 3.2 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants reported in people who were not vaccinated. This percentage drops to 1.0 deaths in those who have a single dose of vaccine or with a second dose applied in less than 120 days.

Meanwhile, the figure drops to 0.5 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants in those who are fully vaccinated (those who have three doses applied or the second dose applied in more than 120 days).

In the country, 80 percent of the population is vaccinated with a complete scheme. According to official data, Argentina has so far distributed 108,120,720 vaccines, of which 103,037,720 were sent throughout the country and 5,083,000 were donated to other countries. Applications total 95,554,597. Thus, 40,545,576 people started their scheme and 36,776,985 completed it, while 3,027,669 people received additional doses and 15,204,367 booster doses.

On the other hand, and in parallel with this marked decrease in the number of cases of COVID-19, there was a progressive increase in the number of cases of Influenza A, in particular the H3N2 subtype, in different parts of the country.

Therefore, the national health portfolio recommends continuing prevention and care measures to prevent respiratory infections, such as maintaining ventilated environments, washing hands frequently with soap and water, wearing a mask, and avoiding going to work, educational or public places in the presence of symptoms.

Regarding masks, controversy arose in La Plata after the local municipality announced the end of their mandatory use for public transport, shops and offices municipalities of the capital of Buenos Aires. Starting next week, masks will be optional for “the circulation, provision of services and any public or private activity that takes place in the La Plata Party,” said Mayor Julio Garro.

The measure of the community chief of the PRO generated a strong rejection from the government of the province of Buenos Aires. The Buenos Aires Ministry of Health called it “irresponsible” and assured that the decision was made “without any scientific and health knowledge”.

Mandatory masking in closed and public places is one of the last measures of care against COVID-19 that are still in force, although little by little the different districts begin to make it more flexible in the face of the drop in infections and the improvement of the health situation due to vaccination.
