MEXICO CITY (AP) — Colombian striker Fredy Montero scored a penalty kick in the first-half discounts and the Seattle Sounders drew a 1-1 draw on Thursday from their visit to Mexico's Lion to enter the CONCACAF Champions League semifinals.
The MLS club sealed their ticket with a 4-1 win on the global scoreboard, ranking among the top four in the regional tournament for the first time in nine years.
Montero billed the penalty after Colombian defender William Tesillo shot down inside the area at the Brazilian wheel João Paulo.
Seattle won 3-0 in the first leg clash in their fief and knew how to resist the initial siege of the Mexicans during the first half. Ángel Mena, Jean Meneses and Fidel Ambriz, the goal cards of the Fiera, were not right against a well-planted opponent.
Montero was in charge of delivering the coup de grace, with a collection on the opposite side where goalkeeper Rodolfo Cota threw himself. It was Montero's third goal in the series,
León found some comfort with the time served by Ambriz's leading goal after a cross from the right.
Seattle will face New York City FC, the reigning MLS champion, in next month's semifinals. The other crossing will face Mexican clubs Cruz Azul and Pumas.
Liga MX clubs have been crowned CONCACAF champions in the last 16 editions of the tournament.
