After the accusation and detention of Petty Officer Luis Alberto Pais, some 300 neighbors demanded his freedom in a mobilization held this which culminated in the Public Prosecution Service. Former Security Minister Maximiliano Pullaro even posted his support on his Twitter account: “Police imprisoned, free criminal”. The mayor of Cañada de Gómez, Stella Clerici, said she sent a statement to the prosecutor Santiago Tosco asking her to cease the pretrial detention. “There is a terrible double rod. We have meetings every day because we ask the cops to do something. Now they do and stop them. If prosecutors and judges are going to be tough, let them be tough on criminals,” he said. Finally, this afternoon they ordered the release.

It was Pais' own lawyer who met with prosecutor Santiago Tosco and, after that meeting, she confirmed to the press that “they are going to release him.” It all happened after demonstrators were received by the chief of the local force, Mario Bonomo, and the chief of police of the entire province Emilce Chimenti, at the door of the police headquarters of that town in Santa Fe.

The case generated controversy in Cañada de Gómez: the non-commissioned officer of the Pais Radio Command was arrested for having entered a law firm in the persecution of a suspect last week in the town of Santa Fe with 40,000 inhabitants.

The entry into the Rossini law firm of Petty Officer Pais and the suspect — identified as Emanuel “Pechito” Cabrera — was filmed from the inside, where it is seen that one of the lawyers stands between the policeman and the man being pursued, who, by chance, was already a client of the place in a criminal case that until now did not transcend about what crime it is.

The policeman was charged last Saturday by prosecutor Tosco for the crimes of rape of home, abuse of authority and simple threats — in two acts. In addition, the official requested 60 days of effective preventive detention, although the hearing judge Carlos Pareto granted 40 days.

Officially, the indictment does not reveal the context in which the persecution began, which ended up inside the law firm. The members of the law firm and the suspect at that hearing were all admitted as complainants. And under that figure, they asked to extend the accusation for aggravated threats caused by the use of firearms and serious aggravated injuries to Cabrera, something that did not happen for the time being.

The videos that took viral status were two. In the first, from inside the law firm it was filmed that the policeman was on the scene without authorization. In the second, Luis Rossini, one of the lawyers, is seen telling the non-commissioned officer that he had dropped the statutory weapon at the door of the place and indicates that he was in a state of nerves, a matter that is denied by the uniformed officer of the Radio Electric Command.

As a counterpart, the private defender of the police, Nair Moreno, said at the hearing that the officer did not need special authorization to enter the Rossini law firm as he sought to end an ongoing crime.

After the accusation and detention of the non-commissioned officer, some 300 neighbors demanded Pais's freedom, Pullaro posted on his Twitter account support for the police and even the Mayor said on Thursday on Radio 2 that he sent a statement to the prosecutor today to end pretrial detention.

The episode generated protests and the situation - which went viral - achieved its objective: the policeman was released this Thursday.
