It is estimated that the Irish community in Argentina numbers about 500,000 people and is the fifth outside that country. It is a traditional celebration, ancient and beloved by that community, reminiscent of its patron saint.

Irish emigrants took their religion and custom to the countries where they went and they never lacked the image of their patron saint. That is why the feast of March 17 is always celebrated with such excitement. Starting in the mid-1990s, the national government of Ireland began using this holiday as a campaign to spread its country internationally and from there it spread throughout the world.

But what does it have to do with beer? This tradition was started by the Irish who emigrated to America, associating Irish beer tradition and culture to this date. Over the years, more than a religious celebration, it became a cultural day to celebrate Ireland and the customs that make up its identity, which is why green outfits and ornaments, shamrocks and goblins. And in that framework it was also associated with friendship and is used as an excuse to meet with other people.

A recent survey conducted by Gelt, a cashback app, looked at how this holiday has an impact on Argentinean consumption. If it is celebrated and what beers do Argentines prefer. In the country for several years in the middle of March, some gastronomic places, but especially bars and pubs, have stained their stained glass windows green, the identity color of Ireland.

In our country, the holiday was first known through films and, in the case of the descendants of Irish people, through their fathers, mothers and grandparents.

According to the users consulted, 90.2% know the holiday, but not everyone celebrates it. Only 27.6% ever celebrated it, 44.3% said they had never done so and 28.1% on several occasions.

Centennials chose IPA in 18.4% of cases, red 16.3%, and black 13.4%. On the other hand, the so-called millennials chose the IPA as their favorite in 17% of cases, the red one equal percentage and the black one 15.9%. For the youngest, centennials and millennials, after the blonde, the red and the IPA compete, while they prefer black to a lesser extent. Meanwhile, the so-called Generation X (born after 1965) and black was the favorite in 22.3% of cases, the IPA 12.7%, the red one 12.6%. Then, when asking the opinion of the older ones, belonging to the so-called baby boomer generation (born between 1946 and 1965), 24.6% said they preferred black beer, 13.5% the red one and 10.8% the IPA.

When asked if they preferred to drink beer at home or in a bar, the answers were as follows: 66.8% of Gelt users stated that they regularly drink beer at home, and 33.2% in a bar. Regarding what shopping is like in the supermarket, the answer varied markedly by age. While the larger generations, from millennials to baby boomers, mostly buy to have at home (67.7%) and to a lesser extent to drink at the moment (32.3%), in the case of centennials it changes: 45.3% buy beer to consume at the moment. This is directly related to what other products they carry: the older generations choose beer in their usual purchase, accompanied by everything they need for those days, weeks or months. 44.6% of centennials accompany the purchase with snacks: chips, peanuts, etc.
