Rap, Feminism and Adversity in the Music Industry: How Ximbo will arrive at Festival SXSW 2022

Over the years, the South by South West Festival (SXSW) has protected Mexican artists and bands that have gained fame, and the 2022 edition will receive the rhyme of La Ximbo, a rapper from Mexico City, on Thursday, March 17. More than 20 years of experience within the music industry.

As part of a Queendom tour showcasing the most recent release of the same name, Ximbo will travel and visit various parts of the republic as well as overseas. On this occasion , the city of Austin, Texas does not want to be with you, I will witness the potential of iconic themes including Vacations, Dejalo.

In an interview with Infobae Mexico, the feminist activist stated that she was happy to participate in the most recent edition of the festival. She also talked about her career in Mexican rap, the adversities she had to face throughout her 20-year career, and the role women play not only in the genre, but also in the national music industry.

“The truth is that I always wanted to go to SXSW. It's a great opportunity, so I wanted it from a very young age. It's a big step as an artist, but not only because I can connect and get a little closer to the mainstream, I also have a lot of lessons to learn.” Ximbo said.

He also noted that Queendom's tour was very important in his career, not only because he was going to present his last two works in Austin, but since the COVID-19 health crisis he returned to a stage that feared everyone.

Regarding her role in Mexican rap, Ximbo said at the beginning of her career that the genre was frowned upon, she rarely listened to, and that she had less participation from women. For this reason, she took activism to give space to all those who decided to become part of the music industry.

In addition, the singer explained that the lack of respect for rap and women in general is the motivation to play a role within feminism.

“In addition to hip-hop, Mexico is a country where 12 women are killed a day, because it is a cultural and systematic issue, I think it is a much more serious thing.”

In addition, Ximbo pointed out that in his songs he talks not only to women, but also to men, people who are not binary, and who enjoy rap. Because with his music he tries to say “there is a way to improve our way of life.” lyrics.

“For me, it was very beautiful to communicate with the audience, people, and family. For me, I'm not an audience or a fan, so I'm like a family walking together, trying to discover new things and live better.”

However, she also pointed out that she faced harsh criticism in certain social sectors due to feminist discourse that some of her songs were immersed in some songs.

“I have received comments from people who do not understand feminism and do not consider it necessary, but they are very superficial opinions of people who do not know very well what is happening. I insist that feminism is not one, there are many of them, and each has its own point of view and a way of revealing oneself. Well, the more we talk about it, the more we'll get these people to understand that it's not. People are willing to hear about these causes and show solidarity.”

In the interview, she also celebrated the actions of President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador (AMLO) on International Women's Day, which celebrates March 8, and a speech at a meeting of women leaders who are changing Mexican history.

“There is a discrepancy in the speech and I definitely do not agree with what happened. At least because the president is not on the side of feminism, nor is it news because there was no other person, we and we paint the monument, and if a woman was killed, we must continue to express ourselves and fight because we cannot care more. If they were expressing it like that, it's because otherwise they didn't listen to us.”

Finally, during the presentation at the SXSW Festival, Ximbo announced to fans that his former colleague Van T was present and created one of the most popular duos in the Mexican rap called Magisterios. He also announced that he would participate briefly at Vibe Latino 2022 next to Centavre on March 20.
