PANAMA (AP) — The return of striker Cecilio Waterman stood out in Panama's call to face the close of the CONCACAF qualifiers this month in search of repeating in the World Cup.
Thomas Christiansen, the Spanish-Danish coach from Panama, called up 26 players on Thursday to face Honduras at home on March 24, visit the United States on the 27th and at home against Canada on the 30th. Panamanians aspire to qualify for the second World Cup in their history.
Waterman, who plays for the Chilean club Cobresal, reappears with the national team.
Christiansen had to rule out Armando Cooper, who recently suffered a torn ligament. Others absent from the previous call are defender Roderick Miller and striker José Fajardo.
“These players I have chosen are the right ones to face these three games,” Christiansen said at a press conference.
Panama marches in fourth place in the CONCACAF hexagonal final, with 17 points.
Today, Canada (25 points), the United States (21) and Mexico) would take the three places directly to the Qatar World Cup in November. Panama is shaping up to bid with Costa Rica (16) for the fourth pass, with which it would play a playoff against a team from Oceania.
“I am worried about the first (of the matches), if we come out... with a good result with a positive mood, we already face the second match in a better way,” Christiansen said. “That's why the first objective is the Honduran party.”
