Liga de Quito, champion of the 2009 edition, advanced this Wednesday to the group stage of the 2022 Copa Sudamericana, a day that marked the elimination of América de Cali by penalties in the hands of compatriot Independiente Medellín.
The albo club, monarch of the Copa Libertadores in 2008, barely needed a one-goal draw to keep the pass and dismiss the modest Mushuc Runa in his first international presentation.
Alexander Alvarado, at 27 minutes, scored the goal for the Liga, while the Runa discount was at 64 through Mauricio Alonso.
In Cali, America, led by former Mexico coach Juan Carlos Osorio, choked on the penalty shootout against Independiente Medellín, and ended up losing 3-1 after forcing the definition with a 2-1 victory, the same result of the first leg in the Antioquia capital.
DIM goalkeeper Andrés Mosquera saved two penalties in the definition and established himself as the hero of the key between Colombian teams.
At the same time, Ayacucho FC took one of the Peruvian tickets to the group stage despite losing 3-2 on their visit to the port of Callao - a neighbor of Lima - to visit Sport Boys.
The goals of the Boys' victory, in his South American debut, were scored by Argentinian Alexis Blanco in the penalty at 23 minutes and 42, and Luis Ramirez at 73.
Ayacucho discounted with both Uruguayan Cristian Techera, at 51, and Minzun Quina, at 73 in prison.
In the first leg, Ayacucho had defeated Boys 2-0 in the city of Huancayo.
The 16 qualifiers from the first round will join in the South American group stage the six representatives from Argentina and six from Brazil, as well as the four teams eliminated from the third phase of the Copa Libertadores.
The draw for the groups of both tournaments, Sudamericana and Libertadores, will be held on March 25 in Asunción.
The 2022 Copa Sudamericana final will be played on October 1 at the Mané Garrincha stadium in Brasilia.
The South American champion will compete in the Copa Sudamericana-2023 against the winner of the Copa Libertadores-2022, and will win a place in the group stage of the Copa Libertadores-2023.
