A man entered an apartment in Punta del Este, stole money, ate food from the refrigerator and then fell asleep on the couch in that same place. He was found by the owner of the house when he woke up and realized that a stranger was sleeping in his house. On Tuesday morning it was he who immediately called the police and got the criminal arrested.

The Tango building, near the well-known Punta Shopping and in the Plaza México area, has a doorman, so it is presumed that the criminal accessed the third floor from the outside. That way, with several criminal records, he climbed to that level to commit a crime, since there was an opening in a window in that place, FM Gente reported.

The stolen thing was in the apartment next door, since the first one was empty. It is known that the criminal stole 5,000 Uruguayan pesos (almost 116 US dollars) from a wallet and credit cards. Of that amount, in principle, only 500 pesos (almost 12 dollars) were recovered and it is not known where the rest of the money was hidden.

Other criminals sleeping in Maldonado

This is not the first time that a thief has been reported to have fallen asleep while stealing a property in Maldonado, a department that contains the city of Punta del Este. In fact, in January 2021, a similar case appeared. At that time, a man returned to his home in Punta del Este and found another man sleeping on his couch. After realizing that he did not really know who was sleeping in his house, he called the police.

Police officers arrived at the scene and arrested the man. When they checked him, they discovered that he had several belongings of the owner of the house, including his cell phone. The criminal had entered to rob, but had fallen asleep in one of the armchairs.

In December 2017, a report from the Maldonado Police Headquarters indicated that an adult citizen called 911 to report that “when he returned from work to his home he found a stranger lying in her bed in her bedroom sleeping.”

When the agents arrived, they found that the mesh of the mosquito net on the kitchen window had been broken, where the intruder had entered. The woman was taken to the sectional and then tried in front of the Justice with a sentence of house imprisonment.

On the other hand, in April 2008, a thief entered a house to rob at night in the city of Maldonado, while the owner and her daughter were sleeping. The man had not rested for 48 hours, so when he crouched under the bed to see if there were valuables, he fell asleep on the floor.

The mistress woke up with the man's heavy breathing, and when she looked to the side, there was a person she didn't know sleeping in her home. He called his daughter to recognize the offender, but they concluded that there was an intruder in his house. The police were called and, within five minutes, the man was handcuffed and removed from the house.

Asked what he was doing in the house, the man replied: “I came to steal, so what?”
