“Today we regret to announce that Sebastian has passed away. In the course of the day we will give data on where it will be veiled. Thank you all for the unconditional support all these years, he doesn't suffer anymore.” The message is in a photo on their social networks. The photo is the latest publication on the account of Sebastián Amurín d'Amico, the 25-year-old who had a tumor on his face.
On his Instagram, where he showed his life, where he told about his cause, where he prosecuted his fight against embryonic sarcoma in the right jaw - a cancer that only affects 0.5% of patients with this type of disease and which he has suffered since 2014 -, where he communicated his feelings, hopes and fears, where he showed his family and his tumor, news of his death was reported. The broadcast channel could not be another one. There, a little less than a month ago, he had uploaded his latest video. In it, shaved and a part of the face covered by a bandage, gave a heartbreaking testimony.
“I connected to let them know that I'm fine, fighting it full, every day a little more. Unfortunately, as many of you may have seen, the tumor grew tremendously. You'll see all the bandage I have. Surely you have seen the photos that I have published in the news. (...) I think all of you had to see how the disease was today, so advanced and complicated. I didn't think I got to this point. I know that unfortunately there is nothing to do in the medical and the alternative. I tried a lot of things, but nothing worked. It's too aggressive a tumor. I remember once that the ray doctor had told me that this tumor was practically immune to all kinds of treatments. He always said 'no, I think there is something to do'. It seems that in the end he was right, it seems that this tumor is immune. I can't do transfers, chemotherapy or radiation therapy. I received so much toxicity during these eight years in so many treatments that unfortunately I cannot receive them anymore. If I do one more treatment, I run the risk of death. What a crappy disease. Knowing that I did absolutely everything and that there is nothing else to be done,” he said.
He added: “Oncologists say that they run into such a tumor every ten years. It's not a common tumor. I had an overly aggressive tumor that didn't let me do much more than all these treatments. But hey, I made this video so they can see me, so they know I'm okay. I don't know much what to say. I don't know where to look for help. There is not much else to do other than wait for a simple miracle that I don't know if it will happen. It's all very shocking. It's hard to believe there's nothing else to do. It's hard to believe that at 25 there's no cure. It's hard to believe I won't have any future. It costs a lot. I hope it's not up to anyone to go through all this. May all the people who are struggling with any disease continue to fight it, that they do not lose faith, that they do not lose hope. Keep fighting for everything. I hope there's a miracle. I hope so. There is no solution anywhere in the world, that is why it has been sought. I have contacted different doctors in the world from Argentina, several have told me no. It was already clear to us that there is no possibility.”
In recent months, the disease has progressed severely. In his posts, he communicated the news, which were not auspicious. “The doctors have talked so much with me and my family. They told us to prepare because the disease is very serious and because my body, little by little, is showing signs that it can't fight anymore. It is weakening and it is logical: 8 years of struggle. My soul has strength but my body no longer has them, so I ask please for help because I don't want to die, I don't think I deserve to die like that, I deserve to have a future like everyone else, to have my family, to have my children, to see my mother enjoy her grandchildren, the natural order, and not have to die now.”
Sebastian was 25 years old, living with his mother María de las Mercedes and his brother Rodrigo in Moreno, Buenos Aires province. He was a fan of River and a broadcaster, like his mom. He had worked in the municipality of his party checking the security cameras. Her life changed in 2014 when, at age 17, she felt a lump in her right jaw. “I thought it was a granite but over time it was growing, so I made a consultation at the Ramos Mejia Hospital. There they decided to do a biopsy. In January 2015, I received the results and all the data were conclusive that I had this sarcoma,” he said.
He made his condition viral. 116,000 followers on Instagram followed the news of his illness. It was shown without a filter. Their testimonies were stark. He asked for help, begged for miracles and openly communicated his decisions. He said, lately, that he was in a lot of pain and that the disease had progressed. He died at noon on Thursday, March 17.
