Daniel Ortega's regime ordered the closure of 25 other NGOs

The Nicaraguan regime, through the Ministry of the Interior, ordered the closure of 25 other NGOs, including an association of journalists, an environmentalist and other women's, indigenous and human rights defenders, the legislature reported on Thursday.

In Nicaragua, Daniel Ortega's executive, with the vote of the Sandinista deputies and their allies, has outlawed at least 87 Nicaraguan NGOs since December 2018.

The Ministry of the Interior has also canceled the registrations and perpetual issues of six US and six European NGOs.

The National Assembly (Parliament), with an official majority, included the new initiative on Thursday's agenda, so it is expected that it will be presented to the plenary.

The NGOs are the Operation Smile Association of Nicaragua, the Nicaraguan Journalists Association Dr. Pedro Joaquín Chamorro Cardenal, and the environmentalist Alexander Von Humboldt Center for the Promotion of Territorial Development and Environmental Management (Humboldt Center).

Also the Violeta Barrios de Chamorro Foundation for Reconciliation and Democracy, the Nicaraguan Foundation for Economic and Social Development (Funides), the Civic Ethics and Transparency Foundation, the Foundation for Freedom, and the Vital Voices of Nicaragua Association.

In addition, the Agora Parneships Foundation, the Foundation for Autonomy and Development of the Atlantic Coast of Nicaragua, the Civil Association of Youth Entrepreneurs of Nicaragua, the Harvard Club Association of Nicaragua, the Nicaraguan Foundation for Human Dignity and the Social Club of Matagalpa.

Likewise, the Citizen Crusade for Democracy Foundation, the Kolping-Nicaragua Foundation, the Institute for Observation Foundation for Democracy and Human Rights, the Women's Collective Civil Association March 8, the Alumni Scholarship Fund Foundation of the Central America School (FOBECA), the Local Development Fund Association, and the Women from Nicaragua.

The others are the Atlantic Coast Centre for Justice and Human Rights Association, the Christian Center for Human Rights Association and the Association Centre for Violence Prevention.

According to the Ministry of the Interior, these 25 NGOs have not reported their financial statements with their detailed breakdowns of income, expenditure, trial balance and breakdown of donations (origin, origin and final beneficiary).

In addition, he argued, their boards of directors have not reported, which violates the General Law on Non-Profit Legal Entities.

The portfolio therefore proposed to cancel the registration of these 25 NGOs within 72 hours.

Assets and shares belonging to these associations/foundations will have prior liquidation, otherwise they will become the property of the State, in accordance with the initiative.

Nicaragua has been going through a political and social crisis since April 2018, which has been accentuated after the controversial general elections on November 7, in which Daniel Ortega was re-elected for a fifth term, fourth in a row and second with his wife, Rosario Murillo, as vice-president, with his main contenders in prison.
