The round of 16 in the UEFA Champions League brought with it the possibility of two Mexicans transcending to the next stage. One of them was Edson Alvarez, who sought the ticket to the quarterfinals with Ajax in Amsterdam. Despite the locality and superiority of the Dutch, a dubious foul committed by the American academy caused the only goal of the match in favor of Benfica.
The two teams reached the Amsterdam Arena with a two-goal match on the global scoreboard. Parity prevailed for much of the match until the 76th minute, when the Mexican exerted light contact with Gonçalo Ramos, who fell to the pitch and managed to convince the central judge, but caused discomfort in Machín because of the rigorous decision.
When Benfica's 88th number tried to reach the final line of the pitch to attempt an offensive move, Edson Álvarez stretched his foot to try to strip him of the ball. Although the limbs of both barely rubbed, a slight push by the Mexican on the lower back of his rival unbalanced him and knocked him to the ground.
