UN Supreme Court ruling on Wednesday on Russia's invasion of Ukraine

The International Court of Justice (ICJ) will issue a ruling on a lawsuit filed by the Kiev government in The Hague on Wednesday, which asks the Supreme Court of the United Nations to order Russia to immediately stop the invasion of Ukraine.

The ICJ will decide at a hearing beginning at 16h00 (15h00 GMT) on an emergency request from Ukraine filed a few days after the start of the invasion of Russia on February 24.

The Kiev government believes that Russia illegally justified the aggression by claiming false genocide against the Russian-speaking population in the Ukrainian regions of Donetsk and Lugansk.

Ukraine wants the ICJ, created in 1946 to resolve disputes between countries, to order Russia to “immediately stop military operations” by adopting emergency measures known as preventive measures.

Anton Korynevych, the representative of Ukraine, said at a hearing that “Russia must be arrested, and the court plays a role in preventing it.”

Over 3 million people escaped Ukraine amid nearly three weeks of conflict. The Russian and Ukrainian delegations resumed talks on Tuesday as Russia's attack on Kiev escalated and the attacks spread across the country.
