UN adopts resolution to promote cycling to combat climate change

On Tuesday, 193 members of the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution on supporting bicycles as a tool to combat climate change.

The resolution proposed by Turkmenistan was adopted unanimously and is not mandatory at the General Assembly.

It is necessary to “integrate bicycles in public transport, rural and urban environments, developed countries and developing countries”.

According to the resolution, increasing the stimulation of bicycle use and increasing road safety will help achieve “sustainable development, including reducing greenhouse gas emissions.”

More specifically, the resolution urges member states to “pay special attention to the use of bicycles through development strategies, including bicycle exchange services,” where possible, and “national, regional and international programs and development policies.”
