193 members of the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution on Tuesday to support bicycles as a tool to combat climate change.

The resolution proposed by Turkmenistan was adopted unanimously, it is not binding at the General Assembly.

It calls for “integrating bicycles into public transport, rural and urban environments, and developed and developing countries.”

According to the resolution, increasing the promotion of bicycle use and improving road safety will help achieve “sustainable development, including reducing greenhouse gas emissions.”

More specifically, the resolution urges member states to “pay special attention to the use of bicycles in cross-cutting development strategies, including bike-sharing services,” and “in national, regional and international development programs and policies” where possible.
