As part of the 30th anniversary of the attack on the Israeli Embassy in Buenos Aires, which left 29 dead and more than 200 injured, the diplomatic headquarters is launching a campaign of remembrance throughout the country, under the slogan “Traces of Terrorism”.
The initiative proposes that the public reflect on the deep mark left on society by the attack that occurred on March 17, 1992, and aims to promote memory of what happened and thus spread a message of rejection of terrorism.
The project consists of a 50-second spot, several graphic pieces and, finally, a filter for Instagram that can be used by those who wish to join the campaign in question, through their social networks.
In the audiovisual piece, which can be seen this week on the screens of the public roads and subway lines of the City of Buenos Aires, people who are carrying out their daily tasks expose their faces and bodies covered in ashes, evoking the moments after the attack and indicating that the mark of the attack tragedy is still present. “Man, woman or child, terrorism affected us all as a society,” says the campaign.
The main event commemorating the 30th anniversary of the attack on the Israeli embassy in Buenos Aires will be held on Thursday at 14.50 (the time the explosion occurred) in the dry square on Arroyo Street, where the diplomatic delegation was located. According to reports, tribute will be paid to the victims and survivors of the terrorist act, who, three decades later, are not yet guilty. In addition, various representatives of the governments of Argentina and Israel will give speeches alluding to the date and, to conclude, there will be a musical performance in Spanish and Hebrew languages.
The embassy will also hold the event “Witnesses to Memory, 30 Years”, in a theater in the City of Buenos Aires. During it, various musical expressions will take place, with the participation of a symphony orchestra and the presentation of a work composed for the occasion by the artist Alejandro Lerner, who composed the song “A day like any day”, which was attended by Idan Raichel (Israeli) and Pablo Rosenberg (Argentinian-Israeli). The work, edited by Warner Chappell, constitutes a musical and cultural bridge between Argentina and Israel.
As part of the tributes, a delegation from the Israeli government will travel to Argentina and plans to meet with President Alberto Fernández. They will also go to the Chamber of Deputies, where they will be received by the head of the Chamber of Deputies, Sergio Massa, together with the presidents of all the blocks represented in the Lower House. The delegation will be led by the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Justice, Gideon Sa'ar; the Deputy Director of the Israeli Chancellery for Latin America and the Caribbean, Jonathan Peled; and a delegation of survivors and families of people who lost their lives in the attack. They also have a meeting with opposition politicians scheduled.
As a preview, over the weekend, the 28 teams of the Professional Football League Cup posed (and will pose for the rest of the week) with a commemorative banner. A minute of silence will also be held on each of the 14 courts to remember the victims of the terrorist attack.
