Sandra Cuevas was suspended as mayor of Cuauhtémoc, Mexico City territory, due to the investigation that the capital's Attorney General's Office (FGJ) is conducting against her for the possible commission of crimes of theft, abuse of authority and discrimination.

Although the judge accepted the charges against him for these three offences, he dropped the charges of unlawful deprivation of liberty, finding that there is insufficient evidence for him to be prosecuted for this.

Immediately, the compañeros of the capital's politicians came to his defense and publicly denounced an alleged political persecution against him by the authorities of the government headed by Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo.

This discontent was joined by the Va X México coalition, which in a statement rejected these actions and the precautionary measures issued by Judge Elma Maruri Carballo, among which is the suspension of activities.

According to the communiqué signed by the national leaders of the Institutional Revolutionary (PRI), National Action (PAN) and Democratic Revolution (PRD) parties said an “arbitrary action” by the judiciary in Mexico City “against a mayor who won at the polls when she was nominated by the PRD-PRI-PAN coalition in that demarcation.”

They also detailed that Judge Carballo did not take into account the constitutional principle of the accused's presumption of innocence, nor did she listen to her arguments, nor did she evaluate the evidence offered to take that measure, which they called “absurd and disproportionate”.

They also showed their annoyance when they affirmed that Sandra Cuevas' human, political and citizen rights are being violated in this process, which, they indicated, places them in a scenario in which law enforcement agencies are used to beat political opponents of the capital's government.

Finally, they stressed their support for the still mayor of Cuauhtémoc and demanded that these precautionary measures be withdrawn, which could set a “very dangerous” precedent for the country's democratic coexistence.

This is an extremely serious fact that should not be allowed, since it sets a very dangerous precedent for our democratic coexistence, and it may lead to the intention at any time to remove other rulers of the city or anywhere in the country from office just because they do not belong to the party of the Head of Government”, the statement ruled.

Despite the accusations made by Alejandro Moreno, Marko Cortes and Jesús Zambrano, CDMX's head of government, Claudia Sheinbaum, responded to the accusations in her that have arisen after the suspension of Sandra Cuevas.

During the press conference she gave this Tuesday, March 15, the president indicated that the situation is a “judicial issue”, so she denied that there are political issues behind FGJCDMX's actions.

Likewise, the former delegate of Tlalpan recalled that the complaint was filed by two police officers, following the experience they had in the demarcation facilities.

“It's false, absolutely false. You know what happened to the mayor and the police. From there, they file a complaint and today it is in the hands of justice. We do not determine the action of a judge or a judge, so what I answer is that it is in the hands of justice is not an issue that has to do with a political issue far from it. It is a judicial issue and it is being defined there and it has to continue to be defined there,” he said.
