The United States New York City became the first semi-finalist of the 2022 CONCACAF Champions League on Tuesday with a 5-5 overall draw against Guatemala's Comunicaciones thanks to the criteria of away goals.

After beating 3-1 at home in the first leg the previous week, this Tuesday New York City visited the court of the Doroteo Guamuch Flores stadium where they lost 4-2 to Comunicaciones.

Argentina's Valentín Castellanos scored 1-0 for the US squad in the 32nd minute of this second leg.

Already in the second half, Andrés Lezcano made it 1-1 for the Guatemalan team at 45.

New York City regained the lead at 53 with the 2-1 scored by the Brazilian Talles Magno.

Comunicaciones reacted with three goals scored by Nicolás Samayoa at 69, Lynner Garcia at 72, and Jose Contreras at 89, but 4-2 in his favor was insufficient.

“We had a good lesson to learn how to act in this type of game when you need to defend, suffer and overcome things,” said Norwegian Ronny Deila, head coach of New York City.

This Wednesday the quarterfinals will continue. The Cruz Azul of Mexico will visit Montreal from Canada with a 1-0 advantage and the Mexican Pumas will try to rise as locals from a 3-0 disadvantage against the US New England Revolution.

On Thursday, the Seattle Sounders of the United States will visit the Lion of Mexico with a 3-0 advantage.
