With the capture of Juan Gerardo Treviño Chavez, El Huevo, federal authorities hit the Northeast Cartel, a criminal organization responsible for a significant part of the generation of violence in Tamaulipas and Nuevo León.

Marcelo Ebrard Casaubón, head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE), pointed out that the capture of this criminal is “one of the most important arrests of the last decade”, as he declared this after meeting with the US Secretary of Homeland Security, Alejandro Mayorkas, at the National Palace.

El Huevo is the nephew of Miguel Ángel Treviño Morales, the Z-40 last leader of the Zetas before the disintegration of the bloodthirsty cartel, and Oscar Omar Treviño Morales, El Z-42, as well as being the brother of Juan Francisco Kiko Treviño Chavez; all previously captured and convicted.

Juan Gerardo would be the last pillar of the criminal organization originating in Tamaulipas, which has been one of the main generators of violence due to its dispute against the Gulf Cartel, which has led to executions and disappearances in the state.

After the capture of the Z-40 and its subsequent sentence to life imprisonment, Los Zetas broke into several criminal cells, which meant a loss of power and domination throughout the country, since they were mainly in all the states adjacent to the Gulf of Mexico, as well as having a presence in northern states of the national territory.

Without a leader to hold the criminal cells together, the bloodthirsty cartel began to cede its power to the established cartels and local criminal organizations that emerged to dispute the territory previously occupied by the Zetas.

The capture of the Egg could mean the end for criminal organizations derived from the Zetas, which would mark the end of one of the cartels that exercised the greatest violence against their rivals and the civilian population.

El Huevo was also the leader of the group of assassins known as Troops of Hell, which has a presence in five states in the center of the country and operates from the Frontera Chica area in the state of Tamaulipas.

Juan Gerardo Treviño Chavez was arrested early this Monday, March 14, by federal public security personnel, who completed an arrest warrant against him for the crimes of extortion and criminal association, issued in the state of Tamaulipas.

He was also wanted by the authorities in Coahuila for the crimes of intentional homicide and terrorism; in addition to having an arrest warrant by the United States on charges of money laundering and conspiracy for drug trafficking.

The leader of the Northeast Cartel was arrested just a few days after Tamaulipas authorities announced a series of rewards for information leading to the capture of kingpins present in the state.

After the arrest of the Egg, several drug blockades and fires were recorded in Nuevo Laredo, which were linked to members of the Northeast Cartel; in addition, hit men and elements of the Mexican Army faced bullets late in the morning.

Through verified social networks of the United States Consulate in Tamaulipas, citizens of Nuevo Laredo were warned about an “emergency situation” near their premises. “U.S. citizens should avoid the area or seek safe haven,” they wrote.

At approximately 2:48 in the morning, the Consulate General account warned that “due to an emergency situation in the city”, all scheduled appointments will be rescheduled for March 14, 2022 at its facilities and Cas.
