The investigations by the Attorney General's Office (FGE) in Zacatecas into the murder of journalist Juan Carlos Muñiz on March 4, 2022 have already borne their first fruits.
Through a statement, they reported that they complied with two arrest warrants against an individual identified as Emanuel de Jesús, who is related to various criminal acts in the municipality of Fresnillo.
According to the authorities, their agents carried out the execution of a search warrant in the aforementioned municipality on March 8. It was there that they arrested the suspect in connection with an investigation into intentional homicide.
In addition, the detainee had an arrest warrant issued against him on 24 July 2020 for the crimes of aggravated kidnapping, qualified robbery and criminal association.
They added that the suspect was transferred and placed at the disposal of the Court that issued the order to resolve his legal situation, and another judicial order against him was immediately completed on August 8, 2021 for the crime of homicide classified as attempted.
The Attorney General's Office assured that in both cases, the suspect was subject to the procedural period established by the Constitution and it was on the afternoon of March 14, 2022 that his legal situation in both cases was resolved.
The judge granted his connection to trial for the offenses of aggravated kidnapping and qualified robbery, as well as for attempted qualified homicide, for which he was detained under the measure of pre-trial detention.
The local press reported on March 4, 2022 that Juan Carlos Muñiz was intercepted while traveling aboard a white car, during the development of his second job as a taxi driver. He had a ticket, but he was the only one attacked.
Rigoberto, as he was known, had about a couple of years collaborating in the medium in the police source, insecurity and red note. He was a father of a family with a wife and daughters. With it, there are six journalists executed so far in 2022.
“The cowardly murder of our colleague and friend has shocked a large part of Fresnillo society and the state, as well as the journalistic guild,” the portal he worked for published on networks.
The Secretary of Public Security of Zacatecas reported the crime at 2:47 p.m., when agents arrived and observed the lifeless body on Ficus Street in the Los Olivos subdivision. Elements of the state prosecutor's office also came to prosecute the crime scene.
“It's totally regrettable, it's unheard of and what we hope is that they find the culprits, we don't know how many people have been involved in the attack, and that justice will be done,” José Celis demanded when he was consulted by this media about his colleague's case.
The Zacatecas Public Prosecutor's Office initiated investigations under the protocol on Crimes Committed Against Freedom of Expression. They also held communications with the Mechanism for the Protection of Human Rights Defenders and Journalists of the Ministry of the Interior.
Finally, David Monreal, governor of the state, condemned the events and expressed his solidarity with friends, family and colleagues. He assured instructions to the ministerial authorities to lead them to find those who committed the journalist's murder.
