The two women aged 26 and 35 who were found by the police in Uruguay in a situation of extreme domestic violence were transferred from the Pereira Rossell Hospital to a home of the Ministry of Social Development. Meanwhile, the mother and younger brother of 13, who had also been hospitalized, returned to their home north of Montevideo.

Both sisters were treated by the Secretariat for Disability because, according to official reports, they had mental disabilities that continue to be evaluated by specialists, reported the newspaper El País.

The case came to the authorities on Sunday, March 7, when, in a peripheral neighborhood north of Montevideo, a woman heard screams in the house next door. He went to the garden of his neighbors and watched a brother rape his sister in broad daylight. She immediately contacted the Police (although she later refused to file the report for fear of reprisals in the neighborhood) and patrol cars of the Montevideo Rapid Response Unit (URPM) arrived at the scene a few minutes later.

Upon entering, they met the mother who accepted that her family was screaming, but because “they were crazy”. They found the two young women who were in a state of total malnutrition (their bodies were the height of 13-year-old girls), lack of hygiene accumulated for years and signs of violence.

Both were in shock. The older one couldn't speak, but instead covered her face with one hand and clung to a teddy bear. The minor, for her part, managed to exchange a few words with the agents, which is why they were removed from there.

Later, the mother ended up confessing that her two daughters, the 13-year-old son (who was also accused of raping her sisters) and she were repeatedly sexually abused by their other three children.

They were transferred to the Centro Coordinador del Cerro clinic to receive first medical attention. One of the policemen in charge then declared that “the two women were very hungry. One of them told a doctor that she hadn't eaten for days. They were going to mate and cigars,” said one of the policemen, adding that “all we did was get them out of their house. The brothers flew from there.” They were then transferred to the Pereira Rossell public hospital.

Karen Sass, the director of this area of the Ministry of Social Development (Mides), confirmed that “in the Mides he tried to get closer to this family based on a request for intervention, but he failed to locate them. And it was only now that we were made aware of this situation. It is the first time that the National Directorate for Disability has intervened”, according to Emphasado.

The Prosecutor for Sexual Crimes, Mariana Alfaro, said that “the situation is critical and that the investigation will be long”

The chief clarified that Mides comes to this type of critical cases quite often and that, “luckily there was a neighbor who dared to report, that is very important”. Only in that way is it possible to get the authorities to know about this type of situation and the objective, after being informed, is to “turn these situations that are very complex,” Sass emphasized.

The technical team of the Pereira Rossell Hospital, in conjunction with the ministry, are working with care not to put the victims at risk. “We want them to have a decent life again,” he concluded, adding that the idea is that after the professional intervention they will be taken to a more definitive home than they are.

Regarding the judicial status of the case, the Sexual Crimes Prosecutor, Mariana Alfaro, said that “the situation is critical and that the investigation will be lengthy.” Due to the state of shock, the young women were still unable to testify before the Sexual Offences Prosecutor's Office. Because the investigation is just beginning and the prosecutor hasn't requested arrest yet, the abusers are at home.
