Sweden's 45-year-old Henrik Stenson will captain the European team at the 2021 Ryder Cup, which will be played in Rome (25 September - 1 October), the European team announced on Tuesday.
Stenson will be the first Swede to occupy this role and will try to recover the trophy lost by Europeans against the United States in September 2021, at Whistrling Straits (Wisconsin).
As a player, he has won three Ryder Cups (2006, 2014 and 2018) of the five he has played.
Stenson was chosen by a group of five, including the last three European captains Padraig Harrington, Thomas Bjorn and Darren Clarke, as well as European Tour CEO Keith Pelley and players representative David Howell.
“I am very happy to be the captain of the European Ryder Cup team, it is an immense honor and I was thrilled to receive the call that made the election official,” Stenson said in the European team's statement.
“I will do everything in my power to try to bring the Ryder Cup to Europe,” he said.
In the United States team, the captain will be Zach Johnson.
