A report by the National Road Safety Observatory presented by the Ministry of Transport indicated that, despite the fact that accident statistics on roads in Colombia decreased during the month of February, accidents continue to leave a high number of fatalities. In fact, according to the report, the number of pedestrians killed so far in 2022 has increased compared to the last two years.

According to the Observatory, in February 2022 there were 461 fatalities in traffic accidents in the country, equivalent to a decrease of 13 people compared to the same time period in 2021. However, the same report indicated that, despite the fact that in the second month of this year there was a reduction in accident rates, compared to the last three years the figures are increasing.

Although 221 pedestrians died in the middle of a traffic accident in 2020, and in 2021 the figure dropped to 168, so far in 2022 deaths increased to 239, which, according to the Ministry of Transport, would make this road actor the one with the highest increase in the number of fatalities so far of the year.

The report by the National Road Safety Observatory also pointed out that the number of vehicle drivers who died during an accident in 2022 has also increased, from 114 deaths in 2020 and 97 in 2021, to 139 so far this year.

In total, according to the National Road Safety Agency, the departments where there has been the most reported increase in the number of people killed in road accidents so far in 2022 are: Valle del Cauca (24), Meta (24) and Antioquia (16).

Likewise, Lota called on road actors not to exceed the established speed limit, noting that, for this reason, so far this year 110 motorcyclists have lost their lives compared to 72 deaths registered in 2021.

In contrast, the director of the National Road Safety Agency highlighted the work of the departments of Risaralda, Casanare, Cesar, Norte de Santander and Magdalena, noting that they have shown the decrease in fatalities in traffic accidents so far in 2022.
