Rodolfo Hernández remains steadfast as an independent candidate for political parties and traditional leaders in his presidential campaign, so he took advantage of Oscar Iván Zuluaga's support for Federico Gutiérrez's campaign to throw pullas at one of his main contenders.
The candidate of Uribism, in a decision that he qualified as personal, decided to renounce his aspiration on March 14 after the results of the consultations were known, to join the campaign of the former mayor of Medellín.
Hernández spoke to La W about his visit to the Vatican, where he will meet with Pope Francis, as candidate Gustavo Petro did, to receive the blessing of his political future. He took the opportunity to say that the Supreme Pontiff “must be told the truth and not a tracalea of lies as politicians usually do”.
In that sense, he referred to President Iván Duque, of whom he took as an example of what he described as deception the voters because when he took office he spoke for almost two hours, “and see what it leaves us, more poverty, more misery, more corruption and the vast majority of wealthier politicians.”
“Now they want to repeat that and they want to repeat it, apparently, in the head of Fico, who is the skinnier and thinner Duke II,” said Hernández regarding the winning candidate of the Team's presidential consultation for Colombia.
Federico Gutiérrez has so far not received official support from the Centro Democrático party. The annexation of Zuluaga, despite being the sole candidate, was processed as a personal decision. The community will hold a meeting at which former President Uribe will dictate the way forward, as some members disagree with supporting the former mayor of Medellín, while others voted for him in Sunday's consultation.
“That's deceiving voters again. Look what 'Fico' did: he collected signatures to stand independent, then, doing the complete opposite of what is the philosophy of collecting signatures was and allied. That's where the fraud started, that's where the lie began,” said Hernández regarding the Zuluaga - Gutiérrez alliance on W Radio.
The former mayor of Medellín said during the presidential debate of El Tiempo y Semana that Zuluaga called him a few hours earlier to tell him about his personal decision and that he would publish a video to report it in the next few minutes. He thanked her and told her that after that they would hold a public event that was not seen.
'Fico', as he calls himself, said he will seek the support of former President Uribe and the Democratic Center, as well as approach Andrés Pastrana and the Conservative party and César Gaviria with the Liberal party in talks in the coming weeks. It should be recalled that this alliance of former leaders was the one that supported Duque to the presidency in 2018.
Hernández said that he will go all the way without forming alliances with any politician and that he will win the elections in the remaining 60 days of the campaign. According to the most recent Invamer poll published by El Tiempo, he is among the three candidates with the highest intention to vote after Petro and Fajardo, above Gutierrez.
According to the forecast, in the first presidential round, the candidate of the Historical Pact would win 44.6% of the votes, followed by Fajardo with 15% and in third place Hernandez would be placed with 13.1% in fourth place Gutiérrez with 8.7%. It should be clarified that this result occurred prior to the outcome of the consultations, with a wider range of candidates.
In the interview with the station, the candidate and former mayor of Medellín also referred to the alleged change of look that was performed with a hair transplant, as they said on social media on March 6. However, he argued that it was a visual effect of some powders applied to him to shoot campaign videos and to darken the hair and hide baldness.
