Outrage and concern surrounds the Instituto Técnico Industrial school in the municipality of Fusagasugá, in the department of Cundinamarca, after the death of a dog known as Luna, who was allegedly the victim of mistreatment by a group of students and died from multiple wounds after falling from the second floor of the institution.
A group of students found the animal badly injured and transferred it to a veterinarian, where it was evaluated. The dog was still alive and conscious, but due to the multiple injuries and traumas her recovery could not be guaranteed and the decision would have been made to sacrifice her.
Through social networks, a student apparently claimed that the fall of the animal had been caused by a group of students, who would be to blame for the animal's death. However, other young people have indicated to the directors that it was an accident.
For this reason, college officials and municipal government authorities carry out the corresponding investigations to establish whether it was a regrettable accident or a condemnable case of animal abuse.
Even the next day, the students of the Instituto Técnico Industrial school held a sit-in at the institution to demand justice in what they believe is a death caused by alleged student violence against Luna.
Students from the institution told the Fusagasugá Channel that they witnessed the case of abuse and pointed out that the teachers of the institution did not help the animal, nor did they attract the attention of the abusers. However, the municipality's Secretary of Education, Luz Fanny López, said that it should be treated with presumption while the corresponding investigation is being carried out.
Likewise, he added that all relevant entities will be used to advance the process, the investigation and, if there are any perpetrators, to take the sanction and protection measures that may be taken.
“It is established to advance the investigative actions leading to the clarification of the events that occurred, in order to determine whether it was an accident or an act provoked. This process must be carried out in accordance with what is mainly established by Law 1774 of 2016, accompanied by supervisory bodies, in order to determine the administrative, civil and criminal responsibilities that may arise,” said the rector of the school, the Secretary of Education and the representative of the Personería in a statement. .
The security cameras that overlook the place where the injured animal was found are not operational, so determining what happened has not been easy for institutional directives. In addition, the testimonies of the students who were there, the only ones who have been able to contribute to the clarification, are different.
One of the versions is that the animal entered the institution at the change of day, reached the second floor, got scared and fell. “I hope that the investigation shows that this is what happened, because the truth does not fit in our mind that one of our students has generated or caused such a situation,” said the rector of the campus Juan Ramón Ruiz.
The authorities of the institution assured that a teacher helped the animal and even paid for veterinary care out of her pocket. In addition, that the minor who made the complaint through social networks, perhaps, did not measure the response she was going to have, so they asked for restraint in the information while determining what happened.
However, the Department's Animal Protection Institute recognizes that animal abuse is a recurrent situation in the municipality and during 2021 they carried out 246 welfare visits and 1,848 animals attended. It will seek to carry out an awareness campaign in schools to avoid future situations.
