KIEV, Ukraine — A series of Russian attacks hit a residential neighborhood in Kiev, causing a massive fire and frantic rescue operation in a 15-storey apartment building. At least one person died and others are still trapped inside.

The Ukrainian army explained in a statement that the attacks were by artillery and that they hit the Svyatoshynskyi district, in the west of the Ukrainian capital, near the suburb of Irpin, which has witnessed some of the worst battles of the war.

Flames came out of the building while firefighters rescued people from the stairs. Smoke invaded the environment.

A firefighter at the scene confirmed the death of one person and noted that several others had been rescued alive, adding that inside the building there were people they were trying to reach.

Russian forces have also intensified night attacks on the western suburbs of Irpin, Hostomel and Bucha, the head of the Kiev region, Oleksiy Kuleba, said on Ukrainian television.

On the other hand, Moscow troops have resumed their efforts to seize the important port city of Mariupol, in the south, and launched new artillery strikes on the center of Kharkiv in the east, the Ukrainian Army General Staff explained on Facebook.
