Amid the shortage of 0 kilometre cars due to demand soaring in Argentina since the exchange rate gap jumped to record levels due to massive monetary issuance, the Government authorized the importation of 939 vehicles with new engines, that is, electric, hybrid and those powered by hydrogen. This was announced through Regulation 159/2022, published this Tuesday in the Official Gazette.

According to what was detailed in the document signed by the National Director of Industrial Policy Management, José Ignacio Bruera Grifoni, these vehicles will be able to enter the country with the tariff reduction planned for these products, “for a period of 18 months, corresponding to the third quarter of the latter”, that is, the period between March 15 and June 14, 2022.

The total quota was distributed among the different brands concerned, so four seats went to Nordenwagen S.A., which plans to import the Porsche Taycan 45 model.

Meanwhile, for Peugeot Citroën Argentina it will have 115 units, which it will distribute between the DS 7 Crossback and Peugeot 3008 models, while the company Volkswagen Argentina will bring 30 Audi vehicles to the country with new engines: the Audi A4, A4 Avant, A4 Allroad, A5, A5 Coupe, A5 Sportback, A5 Cabrio, A6, A6, A6 Allroad, A7, A7 Sportback, Q7, Q8, RSQ8, A8, A8L, E-Tron and RS E-Tron GT

For its part, Mercedes Benz reserved 54 seats that will be distributed in the C-Class (206) and 167 models, while Ford will bring 442 Kuga FHEV and F-150 vehicles.

Finally, Toyota Argentina will be allowed to enter 269 units of Luxus UX250H, IS30H, ES300H, RX450H and NX350H, and Toyota RAV4, C-HR, Camry and Prius cars, and Nissan 25 of the Leaf series.

In addition, on this occasion the national authorities also reported that companies interested in imports have the deadline of 16 May to submit the quota application for the fourth quarter corresponding to the period from 15 June to 14 September 2022.

In the recitals of the Regulation published on Tuesday, the Government indicated that “Decree No. 331/17 established a regime for the import of vehicles with new engines, i.e. hybrid, electric or fuel cell (hydrogen) vehicles, with reduced import tariffs”.

In this regard, it was clarified that for the third quarter of the last extended period, “import quota applications were submitted by Nordenwagen S.A., Peugeit Citroen Argentina S.A., Volkswagen Argentina S.A., Mercedes-Benz Argentina S.A.U., Ford Argentina S.C.A., Toyota Argentina S.A., Nissan Argentina S.A. and Renault Argentina SA”.

“In response to the quota requests made and given that the total quota established for this third quarter of Decree No. 617/21 is not reached, of 1,208 units for terminals located in the country and 76 units for companies representing terminals not located in the country, it is appropriate to allocate a quota of 935 units to companies based in the country and 4 units for companies representing terminals not located in the country”, it was specified.

Thus, there is still a remaining 345 units left to import that was not requested by any company.

The entry of these special vehicles occurs in a context in which the problem of late delivery periods for cars awarded and ordered, which has persisted since last year, is becoming increasingly worrying for the entire sector, in particular for those who completed payments and do not have their unit.
