13,000 formal transport units could paralyze their functions. On March 15, the formal carriers announced a 24-hour strike for this Thursday, March 17, in protest against the breach of a group of agreements made with the Executive Branch in December.

The agreement they refer to was given on December 3, 2021. “We invoke the authority that does not allow the user public to be harmed,” said a representative of the union, during a conference open to the media.

In this way, the transport union indicated that the agreement in question touched on three important points: legal stability, the eradication of informality and an economic subsidy due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Ministry of Transport and Communications (MTC) has reported that it will meet with the union on March 15 at 3:00 p.m. But the carriers added that, if a favorable agreement is not reached, they do not rule out the extension of the strike to 48 or 72 hours.

CARRIERS ON THE VERGE OF BANKRUPTCY

In addition, carriers claimed to be on the verge of bankruptcy due to restrictions on public transport and capacity during the pandemic. In addition, to this is the recent increase in fuel in Peru, motivated by the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

“On the one hand, income falls and, on the other hand, our expenses rise. It is impossible for formal transport to continue to live in such difficult circumstances,” the same representative told TV Peru

“(It would be achieved) Through a subsidy, which is not for the carrier, the subsidy is for an urban public, who cannot afford a higher rate, he added.

As they pointed out, the ticket, which would have previously cost S/1.5 soles, should now be costing S/4.5 or S/5 soles; which is an almost impossible amount to pay. For this reason, carriers expected compliance with the agreements of 3 December and, in particular, that which corresponds to the economic subsidy.

PETROPERU ANNOUNCES FUEL HIKE

PetroPeru announced that since March 11 there will be a substantial increase in fuel prices as a result of the invasion of Russia into Ukraine.

In a statement, the company explained the increase.

As a result of the armed conflict between Russia and Ukraine, there is a global crisis in the supply of crude oil and derived products, which explains the rapid increase in prices internationally. This situation makes our purchases of crude oil, inputs and finished products more expensive and puts the sustainability of supply in the country in an emergency situation”, indicates the entity.

He adds that “due to the current situation, the prices of our fuels (gasoline, diesel, waste, among others) increased as of today. With regard to bottled LPG and diesel for vehicle use, the current list price remains, given that they are within the Fuel Price Stabilization Fund”.
