Downton Abbey came to an end in 2015, leaving his followers sad. The story was set at the beginning of the 20th century and explored the lives of a group of aristocrats, focused on their own problems and personal situations, over a period of time marked by great historical events. However, fans can remember this story again thanks to the arrival on Netflix of Downton Abbey: the film.
“The aristocratic Crawley family and their servants are preparing for a new era and a royal visit. But even the most perfect plan can go wrong”, can be read in the synopsis provided by the streaming platform.
The production, which originally premiered in 2019, continues the story told in the series, and also features much of the original cast.
The original fiction, created by Julian Fellowes, ran for six seasons and came to the end of its broadcast in late 2015. Soon after, his unexpected leap into cinema was given the green light with the film of the same name, and now, three years later, will arrive the long-awaited sequel — titled Downton Abbey: A New Era — which will bring back the much-loved characters. The second film, produced by Universal International and Carnival Films, will be released in May for US cinemas and in April for the United Kingdom.
The plot and cast of Downton Abbey: A New Era
The Crawleys take a family trip to the south of France, after receiving the news of a mysterious inheritance of Violet (Maggie Smith), the widowed matriarch and countess of Grantham. The woman communicates to her descendants that, by means of a will, a stranger gave her a house located in the south of France. This time, the story will focus largely on Violet's past, about which very little is known.
Maggie Smith, Hugh Bonneville, Elizabeth McGovern, Michelle Dockery, Laura Carmichael, Penelope Wilton, Allen Leech, Joanne Froggatt, Brendan Coyle, Sophie McShera, Lesley Nicol, Jim Carter, Tuppence Middleton, Imelda Staunton, Phyllis Logan, Robert James-Collier, Kevin Doyle and Harry Haddenden -Paton will be the stars that return to their roles in Downton Abbey: A New Era. Hugh Dancy, Laura Haddock, Nathalie Baye and Dominic West are the new faces that will appear in the sequel.
Fellowes, creator of Downton Abbey and winner of the Oscar, was in charge of the screenplay alongside Gareth Neame and Liz Trubridge. The direction fell to Simon Curtis.
When is the Netflix movie released?
According to the latest reports, Downton Abbey: A New Era will be shown in U.S. cinemas from May 20 in the U.S. Originally the release date was March 18, but it was decided to postpone its release before another big release that was scheduled for that same week (DC Super Pets). At the moment, Netflix has not confirmed when it will arrive in the catalog of its platform.
It should be remembered that, this has been one of the productions affected by the closing of cinemas during the toughest stage of the COVID-19 pandemic. Filming began in April 2021, after a long wait for viewers. It was in July that the filming took place in Hampshire, England, and after completing the production phase, it was confirmed what the official title would be in August.
