Miami, March 15 The Florida (United States) Nature Conservation Agency warned on Tuesday about the dangers posed by crocodiles in early spring. The warning arrived late on a pit bull dog that was fatally attacked by one of these reptiles on a university campus in the southwestern part of the state. Around this time each year, the Florida Wildlife Fisheries Commission (FWC) published a manual entitled “Tips for safely coexisting with crocodiles.” This manual is what is needed in a state that, according to the same organization, has about 1.3 million reptiles spread across 67 counties. According to a local television channel, one of the animals about 2 meters long killed a pit bull in Florida State University Park in the town of Venice (west coast) on Monday. Whenever there is an attack on a human or pet by a crocodile, the FWC will be alerted, in which case one of the hunters was sent to the field to catch two crocodiles about two meters or so, and one of them would have killed a pit bull. Signs of spring (warm weather, flowers, and nesting birds) occur throughout Florida. Warmer temperatures mean that crocodiles become more active and visible, emphasizes the FWC in a manual published today. Although Florida claims serious injuries from crocodiles are rare, the FWC recommends keeping a safe distance and not feeding them. During the day, not at dusk or dawn, swim in rivers, ponds, or dams only in areas designated for the activity. “Avoid swimming in fresh or salty water by putting your pet on a leash and keeping it away from the water's edge. Your pet may be similar to the natural food of a crocodile.” The manual also emphasizes. According to a report published in 2021 by Outforia, a digital media medium on nature and adventure, between 2009 and 2019, 247 people died in accidents involving animals in Florida, second only to Texas (520) and California (299). Crocodiles are ranked 5th in the ranking of animals with the most human lives in the United States since 1970, with 33 deaths compared to 70 in brown bears. One of the most dramatic cases of death by crocodiles occurred in 2016 at a hotel in Walt Disney World Park in Orlando (Central Florida), where a two-year-old boy was taken into the water by one of these animals while he was with his family. It is located on the shores of an artificial lake. His parents jumped into the water and tried to release the boy from the jaw of a two-meter crocodile, but he did not succeed. The body of the minor was found intact by scuba divers at the bottom of the lake 16 hours later.
