BEIJING (AP) — The number of new cases of COVID-19 in China skyrocketed more than twice the previous day on Tuesday as the country grapples with its worst outbreak since the first days of the pandemic.
The National Health Commission reported that 3,507 new cases of local spread have been identified in the last 24 hours, compared to 1,337 infections the previous day.
A highly contagious variant known as “stealth omicron” has put the Chinese government's zero-tolerance strategy to the test, which it had previously managed to keep the virus under control following an initial lethal outbreak in early 2020.
Most of the new cases occurred in Jilin province, in northeastern China, where 2,601 infections were reported. Other smaller outbreaks have occurred in different parts of the country, including in cities such as Beijing, Shanghai and Shenzhen.
